What can cause hair loss in a woman?

Hair loss in women has become a very common problem these days. We already know that everyone loses hair every day and it is a completely natural process. But, if you are losing too many hairs daily then it is a problem.

It is absolutely normal to see slight hair loss while washing your hair or blow-drying or brushing etc. Clinical studies show that a person loses around 100 strands of hair every day. These hair fall off so that new strands can replace them

However, if you notice 200 or 300 or even more hair strands falling off then it is definitely a matter of concern. Especially if you are women because genetically women don’t lose that much of hair. Many women even complain about dull, brittle, shine-less hair.

So, what is the main reason behind it?

Reasons for Hair Loss in Women

Here are the top 5 reasons behind the problem of hair loss in women. Now, let’s discuss them and also talk about their remedy.

1) Excessive Styling

Properly styled hair is the need of the day. It is extremely difficult to not style your hair. Everybody wants to look good and presentable and when you style your hair, your look amazing.

However, this excessive styling or everyday styling is damaging your hair. The styling products are loaded with chemicals and you are constantly exposing your precious hair to those harsh chemicals. As a result, it takes a toll on your hair’s health. Also, too much of heat burns the outer layer of your hair strand making it brittle, dull and lifeless.

If you cannot completely stop styling your hair then you can at least limit it. Instead of doing it every day, do it once or twice a week. Do not wash your hair every day. Wash it just once or twice a week and then you can style them.

You can also bring life back to your hair by oil treatments. Regularly oil your hair. In fact, oil your hair nicely before washing your hair. This will help in keeping your hair more moisturized and soft. Try to use a paraben-free shampoo and condition. If possible, you should regularly visit hair salon and spas.

2) Iron Deficiency – Anemia

Anemia or iron deficiency is a common problem among women. When you are on your period, you lose a lot of blood and this often causes iron deficiency.

Iron is very important for the formation of new red blood cells. If you do not have enough iron in your body, you will not produce enough blood. When your hemoglobin (blood levels) is less, your body does not supply it to the hair. Yes, this is true.

Your system does not consider hair and nails as an important part of your body. Only after replenishing all the organs whatever is left is given to your hair and nails. So, if you suffer from anemia then all your oxygen-rich blood is used up by your internal (main) organs. As a result, your hair lacks oxygen-rich blood and it falls off.

Other symptoms of anemia include weakness, fatigue, dizziness, mood swings, headache, pale skin etc. If you notice any of these symptoms along with hair loss then consult your physician immediately. He will prescribe you some iron supplements and soon your hair loss problem will be solved.

You can also eat iron-rich fruits, vegetables, and nuts and improve your health naturally.

3) Telogen Effluvium

Telogen Effluvium is a medical term for hair loss in women. It affects women who are pregnant, suffering from stress, depression or a serious health condition or have undergone surgery.

This type of hair loss in women is directly related to health problems. As soon as you become healthy again, your hair loss will stop. Consider proper medication, exercise, yoga, meditation, and healthy diet because all these will help you treat your problem fast.

4) Hypothyroidism

A thyroid problem is also a major cause for hair loss in women. When you have hormonal imbalance it results in hypothyroidism.

In hypothyroidism, your cells do not get enough amount of oxygen. This affects the normal functioning of your cells and you get hair loss. Some other symptoms include constipation, fatigue, unexplained fluctuations in weight, lack of concentration, depression, brittle nails etc.

If you are suffering from any of these issues then you should consult your physician. Also, make sure that you eat a balanced diet every day. Yoga, exercise, and meditation also help to treat hypothyroidism.

5) PCOS

PCOS also was known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a very common health condition among women who are in their reproductive age. In this condition, cysts are formed in either one or both the ovaries. These cysts cause hormonal imbalance.

PCOS causes many health problems like insulin resistance, obesity, irregular periods, infertility, trouble reducing weight, acne, unwanted facial hair growth, male pattern baldness etc.

If you are diagnosed with PCOS then you have to keep this condition under control because there is no permanent treatment. Yoga, exercise, balanced diet and reducing stress treats this problem naturally. Once the problem is treated you will not experience hair loss.

  1. I did dieting for 3 months because I really really wanted to lose weight and guess what the side effect was – hair fall. I am never dieting again in my life no matter what.

  2. I have pcos and that is causing my hair fall. It is really a horrible experience, I can do anything to stop my beautiful hair from falling. Thanks for this article, a lot of women don’t even know the hidden reason behind their hair fall.

  3. Thanks for these pointers. One thing I also believe is lack of exercise. I was also losing hair but then I realized that if could be due to improper blood circulation so I started exercising and my hair loss has stopped now
